30,000 tickets for 54,000 rail passengers booked in 3 hours
The railways is set to resume a
limited number of passenger services on May 12 after a nearly 50-day hiatus and
has started taking online bookings on IRCTC. However, to ensure strict
compliance of social distancing norms, not all seats will be made available for
booking on these trains. These trains will run from New Delhi railway station.Officials
said till Monday 9 pm, the overall revenue generated from sale of tickets for
these AC trains was around Rs 10 crore. They said there was brisk booking of
tickets in trains coming from Howrah and the ones leaving Delhi. Booking for
trains from Chennai started after 9 pm, sources said.
'Balanced strategy' needed for path ahead: PM Modi to CMs
India will have to devise and
implement a "balanced strategy" to deal with the coronavirus
pandemic, and the biggest challenge for the country will be to ensure that the
infection does not spread to villages, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told chief
ministers on Monday during a video conference. PM Modi hinted that a more
graded relaxation of the lockdown could be on its way during a lengthy
interaction with the CMs. “We have a twofold challenge — to reduce the
transmission rate of the disease and to increase public activity gradually,
while adhering to all the guidelines,” he said.
13,500 British nationals
repatriated from India on 58 flights
Around 13,500 British nationals
stranded in India due to the coronavirus lockdown have been repatriated to
their homes in the UK, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said. More than
30,000 British travellers have now returned to the UK on 142 special UK
government charter flights from 27 different countries and territories since
the outbreak of the coronavirus.
Bengal being politically targeted
over Covid-19: Mamata to PM
West Bengal is being
"unnecessarily targeted" over its handling of Covid-19, chief
minister Mamata Banerjee told Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, insisting
she wants to fight the pandemic jointly with the Centre, TMC sources said. She
also demanded that the Centre formulate a "clear strategy" to fight
the disease.
2nd round of financial assistance
to construction workers in Delhi
Delhi government will give second
round of financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to city’s construction workers, most
of who have been without jobs since the lockdown started and have no hope of
their lives coming back on track soon. In the first round, around 40,000
workers registered with the Construction Workers Welfare Board of Delhi were
given the financial assistance.
Ready to deal with visible,
invisible enemies of India: Rajnath
Defence minister Rajnath Singh on
Monday said his ministry is committed to destroying all the enemies of the
nation including those visible on the borders or invisible ones like the
coronavirus. Singh also said India must become self-reliant in military
manufacturing and that the government was supporting the domestic defence
industry by coming out with a policy framework.
