Humanity will surely
overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday,
as he hailed the efforts put in by various Ministries to help people during the
lockdown. “Proud of the Indian Railways team. They’ve been continuously helping
our citizens in this crucial hour,” Mr. Modi said in response to a tweet by
Railway Minister Piyush Goyal. He said that while passenger trains had stopped,
the Railways had not stopped relief efforts. The Income Tax
department said that as a relief to micro, small and medium enterprises
(MSMEs), income tax refunds of ₹5,204 crore have been issued in the last 10
days to nearly 8.2 lakh small businesses.Mr. Modi tweeted that the department
was committed to helping dynamic small and medium businesses.
- 'India to provide additional relief, economic stimulus soon'
Finance minister
Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said India will soon announce fresh relief
measures and economic stimulus to help the poor and industry fight the impact
of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participating in a World Bank meeting, Sitharaman
also assured the global community that India would continue to supply critical
medicines to needy countries.

Three weeks after it
unveiled its first package on March 27 for an economy battered by the Covid-19
pandemic, the Reserve Bank of India on Friday issued a Rs 50,000-crore
refinance facility to banks for lending to NBFCs through a new targeted
long-term repo lending operation, Rs 50,000 crore funding support for refinance
institutions, and reducing rates on bank funds parked with RBI.
- Social distancing rules should be same for Ramadan, Easter: Trump
President Donald Trump
said Saturday he hopes U.S. Muslims will be held to the same social distancing
standards during Ramadan as Christians at Easter, when a number of faithful
chafed against coronavirus-related restrictions on large gatherings. "I
would say that there could be a difference," Mr. Trump said during his
daily coronavirus press conference. "And we'll have to see what will
happen. Because I've seen a great disparity in this country."
- Government nod mandatory for FDI from neighboring countries
In a move that will
restrict Chinese investments, the Centre has made prior government approval
mandatory for foreign direct investments from countries which share a land
border with India. Previously, only investments from Pakistan and Bangladesh
faced such restrictions.
The revised FDI policy
is aimed at “curbing opportunistic takeovers/acquisitions of Indian companies
due to the current COVID-19 pandemic,” said a press release from the Department
for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade on Saturday
